'Roses are green' tunic

roses are green tunic

I'm a fan of tunic-length tops these days -- long enough to keep everything covered when bending over to pick up my son. I sewed this one before we left for vacation out of some cotton knit in my stash (originally bought at a great price at Denver Fabrics last spring). I was going for an Anthropologie look, hence the mix of prints and funky yoke line.

It looks cute with a cropped cardigan and skinny jeans. Bonus: it's roomy enough that it will work for early pregnancy and post-partum. Transitional pieces are a Good Thing to have in a mother's wardrobe, I have discovered.

  3. Super cute, Laura!! I love your style. =) Being the seamstress that I am, did you make your own pattern or is it from one of the big four companies?

  4. Thanks so much, Nabila Grace! :)

Oops, Brittany, I can see how that might come across as a pregnancy announcement, but it is not. We do hope and pray for more children, so it's just something I keep in mind when planning my wardrobe!

Cheri, it's my own pattern; I draped the yoke on a dressform and then cut the rest flat. It's not perfect but it works! :)

  7. I wear this look a lot. Skinny jeans seem too revealing without a tunic top over it. I love sweaters that hit mid-thigh too. Someday I'll attempt to sew one!

  8. Too funny! I bought the same fabric that the body of the tunic is made out of at Denver Fabrics this past spring also! Great inspiration for me to try to make something out of it.

  9. It's super cute! I love the fabrics and design! It could easily grace the pages of Anthropologie. I'm not usually a skinny jean fan, but this look I love! I've got to get over my fear of working with knits...

  11. This top is fabulous! I love the shape of the yoke.

Could you possibly give some tips on working with knitted fabrics? Do you overlock the raw edges or just zigzag stitch? And how do you stop it ruffling when it's sewn? As you can probably tell, my forays into knit fabric sewing have not gone well...!

  12. That is adorable! I am quite fond of tunic tops, but as of yet, only have one. I would love to add some more to my wardrobe!
Do you have any recommendations for a good tunic pattern? I'm not very experienced at apparel sewing, but am willing to try!

  13. Thank you all so much for your kind comments!

Jafion, I am planning on sewing another knit top soon so I will pass along some tips when I post about that! :)

M.E., I actually haven't sewn any tunics from commercial patterns that I've been happy with, so I'm sorry I can't recommend any. If I ever find a good one, I'll certainly share!
